Understanding Arthritis

Arthritis is a disease that majorly affects the joints and leads to symptoms like pain and inflammation, causing degenerative changes in joints. People of all ages, races, and sexes live with arthritis — there are more than 100 types of arthritic presentations with a prevalence of 22-39%.

DISEASE CLASSIFICATION

Common Types of Arthritis

Arthritis is not one condition. These are the five presentations we see most often, and each is treated differently.

Osteoarthritis

The most common form, affecting the hands, hips, and knees.

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)

An autoimmune disorder presenting inflammation, joint deformity, and stiffness.

Gout

A form of inflammatory arthritis leading to severe pain.

Fibromyalgia

Causes pain all over the body, associated with fatigue and emotional distress.

Psoriatic Arthritis

A long-term condition affecting both the skin and joints.

WHY IT HAPPENS

Causes and Symptoms of Arthritis

Causes of Arthritis

  • Wear and tear of a joint from overuse
  • Age (osteoarthritis is most common in adults over 50)
  • Injuries
  • Obesity
  • Autoimmune disorders (RA)
  • Genetic inheritance

Symptoms of Arthritis

The Ayurvedic Definition of Arthritis

Ayurveda provides a vivid description of the various types of arthritis, covered under the terminologies Sandhigata Vata (osteoarthritis), Amavata (rheumatoid arthritis), and Vataraka (gout). The causative factors and treatments of each type are described in the classics. Treatment involves Panchakarma, other external Ayurvedic therapies, and herbal medicines.

OUR APPROACH

How Arthritis Is Treated Here

A standard treatment protocol is followed for all patients based on their presenting complaints, symptom intensity, and associated medical conditions.

External therapies — Janu Basti, Kati Basti, Mrudu Abhyanga, Patra Pinda Sweda, Churna Pinda Sweda and Kashaya Dhaara are planned according to the presenting condition.

Panchakarma and medicines — Basti (enema) and Virechana (detox) are used in certain cases, followed by herbal medicines over a course of 1-3 months.

Daily support — Dietary advice, lifestyle changes, yoga and exercise are advised throughout.

FIVE CLASSICAL THERAPIES

What Your Programme Includes

Your doctor combines these according to your arthritis type, the joints involved and how much inflammation is present.

Janu Basti

A ring of dough around the knee holds warm medicated oil in place — deeply penetrating and unmatched for chronic knee pain.

Pizhichil (Oil Bath)

A steady stream of warm medicated oil poured over the whole body — the “royal treatment” for Vata-driven joint disorders.

Kizhi (Poultice)

Hot herbal boluses applied to affected joints. Reduces inflammation, stiffness and pain remarkably fast.

Herbal Formulations

Yogaraja Guggulu, Maharasnadi Kashaya and other classical medicines that reduce inflammation systemically.

Dietary Correction

A Vata-pacifying diet with warm foods, gentle spices and no aggravating factors — critical for long-term relief.

Herbal Remedies and Medicines

Ayurveda for arthritis draws on herbs such as Shunthi, Nirgundi, Lashuna, Bala, Ashwagandha, Dashamoola, Guggulu, Haridra, and Amlavetasa — recognised for anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antioxidant properties. Classical formulations include Yogaraja Guggulu, Kaishora Guggulu, Lashunaadi Vati, Dashamoola Kashaya, Balarishta, Ashwagandharishta, Nirgundi Kashaya, and Ashtavarga Kashaya. External oils used for knee pain include Ksheerabala Taila, Mahanarayana Taila, Mahavishagarbha Taila, and Prasarinyadi Taila.

SYMPTOM CHECK

Is This Right For You

Ayurvedic Arthritis Care is the right starting point if any of this sounds familiar. If you’re dealing with general joint or muscular pain rather than a diagnosed arthritis condition, see our Pain Management programme.

Restricted Movement

Joint pain resulting in restricted movement, especially in the hands, hips, or knees.

Morning Stiffness and Swelling

Inflammation, stiffness, or joint deformity, particularly worse in the morning.

Sudden, Severe Flares

Sudden, severe joint pain consistent with gout.

A Named Arthritis Diagnosis

A diagnosis (or suspicion) of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, psoriatic arthritis, or fibromyalgia.

Worse in Cold or Damp Weather

Joint pain that worsens in cold or damp weather.

Extra Weight on Knees and Hips

Extra body weight adding pressure to knees and hips.

A DIFFERENT ROUTE

Beyond Painkillers

Painkillers give day-by-day relief but slowly damage the gut, kidneys and cartilage. Our patients typically reduce painkiller load significantly within a month and often eliminate it altogether by the end of a structured programme.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN

When We Ask You to Wait

Ayurveda is gentle, but it is still medicine. Your doctor screens for the following at consultation, before any programme is scheduled.

Currently Pregnant

Virechana and certain Panchakarma therapies are not used during pregnancy.

Active Gout Flare

With severe inflammation, some external therapies are deferred until the acute flare subsides.

Advanced Joint Damage

Where a rheumatologist has already recommended surgery, we’re honest about this rather than delaying a necessary referral.

Uncontrolled Autoimmune Activity in RA

Coordinate any change in biologic or DMARD dosing with your rheumatologist.

TRANSPARENT PRICING

Arthritis Treatment Cost in Bangalore

What the programme costs depends on your specific arthritis type, the therapies prescribed, and programme duration. Your clinic confirms the exact price at consultation, before any programme is booked.

Arthritis — FAQs

Arthritis means the joints become painful, stiff, or swollen. It can happen at any age, though certain types are more common with advancing age.
Arthritis may result from age-related wear and tear, injuries, extra body weight, infections, autoimmune conditions, or family history, depending on the specific type.
Yes — many people with arthritis find it harder to walk, climb stairs, or get up from a chair as joint pain and stiffness progress.
Early signs include joint pain, morning stiffness, swelling, and difficulty bending the affected joint.
Yes — Ayurveda studies your body type (prakriti) and the specific joint symptoms to plan a personalised approach, which differs depending on whether the presentation is osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or gout.
It typically includes specific Ayurvedic massage and herbal steam therapies, gentle detoxification (Panchakarma), Janu Basti for knee-specific care, herbal medicines, and lifestyle guidance tailored to your arthritis type.
No — joint pain is a symptom, while arthritis is a diagnosed condition where the joint is inflamed or degenerating. Not all joint pain is arthritis.
Some patients find relief when they avoid very oily, very cold, or heavy foods, and your doctor will personalise dietary guidance based on your dosha assessment and arthritis type.
Osteoarthritis is the most common form, primarily affecting the knees, hands, hips, and spine.
Simple, gentle yoga and stretching can help joints stay flexible, reduce stiffness, and ease the stress and frustration that often accompanies chronic pain.
Janu Basti is a procedure where warm medicated oil is retained over the knee joint using a ring of dough, reducing pain and stiffness while improving range of movement — considered especially effective for osteoarthritis.
Yes — stress can tighten muscles and increase the perceived intensity of joint pain, which is why lifestyle and stress management are part of a complete treatment plan.
No — younger people can also develop arthritis due to injuries, lifestyle factors, or autoimmune conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, which can appear at any age.
Yes — extra body weight adds pressure on weight-bearing joints like the knees and hips, which can worsen pain and accelerate joint wear.
Osteoarthritis results from wear and tear on the joint over time, while rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition where the body’s immune system attacks the joint lining, causing inflammation and potential deformity.
Yes — gentle massages like Mrudu Abhyanga can help relax stiff muscles and improve joint comfort, and are selected based on whether inflammation is present in your specific presentation.
Every case is different — your doctor plans the duration after assessing your specific joints, arthritis type, and severity, typically following an initial detox phase with 1 to 3 months of herbal and lifestyle support.
Yes — many people with arthritis feel increased stiffness in cold or damp weather, which Ayurveda addresses partly through Vata-pacifying warmth-based therapies.
Yes — ongoing joint pain and inflammation can make the body feel fatigued or low on energy, which is why a holistic plan addresses more than just the joint itself.
Yes — Ayurveda classifies gout as Vataraka and supports it through digestion-focused herbs, food-habit correction, and targeted therapies to manage flare-ups and reduce recurrence.
