The poultice is the constant. What is inside it — and how it is applied — is calibrated to the presentation.

Patrapinda Sweda

Poultices filled with medicated leaves — typically Nirgundi, Erand and Arka. Especially effective for joint pain, arthritis and stiffness.

Churna Pinda Sweda

Poultices filled with medicated herbal powders. Warming and drying — used for Kapha-driven conditions like weight, oedema and stiffness.

Shashtika Shali Pinda Sweda

Poultices filled with medicated rice cooked in decoction. Nourishing and building — used for muscle wasting and Vata-driven conditions.

Jambira Pinda Sweda

Poultices with lemon fruit and herbal powder. Especially effective for stubborn muscular pain and stiffness.

WHAT TO EXPECT

What Happens During a Session

1

Consultation

A short consultation where the doctor checks your constitution and current condition, and confirms which poultice filling and oil suit you.

2

Warm oil massage

A brief warm oil massage (Abhyanga) prepares the skin and muscles, softening tissue before the poultices are applied.

3

The poultices are applied

The herbal poultices are heated and pressed rhythmically over the affected area in circular and linear strokes, alternating between two or more bundles so the heat stays consistent throughout.

4

Reheating through the session

The therapist reheats the poultices in warm medicated oil as needed to maintain a steady, comfortable temperature for the full session.

5

Wipe-down and rest

The area is wiped down with a warm cloth, a short rest is advised, and your doctor may recommend a warm bath or follow-up medicines depending on your condition.

Sessions typically run 30–45 minutes  ·  A course of 7–14 sessions is standard for most conditions  ·  Non-invasive, no medication required

WHERE IT WORKS

Where Kizhi Works Best

Kizhi is one of the fastest-acting classical therapies for pain and stiffness. Most patients feel meaningful relief within the first two or three sessions — which is why it is a mainstay of our arthritis, sciatica and frozen-shoulder programmes.

SYMPTOM CHECK

Is Kizhi Right For You

Kizhi is worth considering if any of this sounds familiar:

Ongoing joint pain that limits movement

Arthritis, osteoarthritis, or stiffness that’s outlasted rest and painkillers.

Morning stiffness that takes a while to loosen up

Especially if it’s lasting more than 30 minutes.

Sciatica or shooting pain down the leg

Nerve-related leg pain that flares with sitting or standing.

A frozen or stiff shoulder

Reduced range of motion that’s making daily tasks harder.

Recovering from an injury or sports strain

Muscle tightness or stiffness following an injury.

Chronic low back or neck pain from a desk job

Cervical or lumbar spondylosis aggravated by long hours sitting.

BEFORE YOU BOOK

Contraindications

Kizhi is best postponed or avoided in a few specific situations:

Fever or Infection

Active fever, infection, or acute inflammation.

Skin Conditions

Open wounds or severe skin conditions over the treatment area.

Uncontrolled Diabetes or Heart Conditions

Uncontrolled diabetes or heart conditions, without medical clearance.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy, unless specifically cleared by your doctor.

None of these are permanent exclusions — most resolve once the underlying issue clears, and your consultation is exactly where this gets checked before a session is booked.

TRANSPARENT PRICING

Kizhi Treatment Cost in Bangalore

What a Kizhi session costs depends on the variant prescribed, the herbs and oil formulation used, and whether it’s combined with other therapies like Abhyanga. Your clinic confirms the exact price at consultation, before any session is booked — not after.

Kizhi — FAQs

Kizhi is a herbal poultice therapy, not a standard massage. Warm cloth bundles filled with medicated leaves, powders, or rice are pressed rhythmically over the affected area, combining heat and herbal medicine to work on the tissue directly — a massage alone doesn’t deliver that.
Your doctor decides during consultation, based on your specific condition and dosha imbalance. Patrapinda Sweda (leaf poultice) suits joint pain and arthritis, Churna Pinda Sweda (powder poultice) suits Kapha-driven stiffness and oedema, Shashtika Shali Pinda Sweda (medicated rice) suits muscle wasting and Vata conditions, and Jambira Pinda Sweda (lemon and herbs) targets stubborn muscular pain specifically.
Most courses run 7 to 14 sessions depending on how long you’ve had the condition and its severity. Mild stiffness often responds in 5 to 7 sessions, while chronic arthritis or long-standing back pain may need a longer course, sometimes combined with internal medicines.
It’s warm to hot, but always within a comfortable therapeutic range. The therapist checks the temperature constantly and adjusts based on your feedback — it should never be uncomfortable or burn.
No. It’s one of the more comfortable classical therapies — warm, rhythmic, and deeply relieving rather than painful. Some people feel mild tenderness over an already-inflamed joint, but that settles quickly.
Yes. Kizhi is a physical therapy and doesn’t interact with medication, so it works alongside your existing care. Many patients get the best results combining Kizhi with physiotherapy for strength and mobility work.
Arthritis and joint pain, sciatica and low back pain, frozen shoulder and cervical stiffness, post-injury pain, and muscle wasting or neuromuscular conditions are the most common reasons patients come in for Kizhi.
Cost depends on the poultice type prescribed, session duration, and whether it’s combined with other therapies, since the herbs and oil formulation genuinely vary by condition. Your clinic confirms the exact price at consultation, before any session is booked.
Kizhi is best postponed or avoided during active fever or infection, over open wounds or severe skin conditions, in uncontrolled diabetes or heart conditions, and during pregnancy unless specifically cleared by your doctor. None of these are permanent exclusions — your consultation is where this gets checked before a session is booked.
Patra Pinda Sweda uses fresh medicinal leaves fried in herbal oil, while Churna Pinda Sweda uses dry or lightly oiled medicated herbal powders instead. The leaf version tends to suit Vata-driven degenerative joint pain, while the powder version is often chosen for Kapha-driven stiffness and swelling.
Many patients notice reduced stiffness and warmth in the treated area within the first two or three sessions. For chronic conditions, improvement builds gradually over the full course rather than after a single visit.
Yes, Kizhi is commonly used to manage rheumatoid arthritis symptoms, particularly in controlled stages of the condition, though your doctor will assess whether it’s appropriate during an active flare.
Avoid cold exposure, cold drinks, and refrigerated food right after treatment. A short rest, warm food, and light movement rather than strenuous activity help the therapy’s effects settle in.
Yes, it’s one of the therapies specifically indicated for frozen shoulder and cervical stiffness, since the combination of heat and herbal medicine helps loosen tissue and improve range of motion over a course of sessions.
Pain and stiffness are the primary reasons patients seek it out, but the improved circulation and sweating induced during the session also support general detoxification and muscle relaxation, which is why some patients report better sleep and reduced tension as well.
Yes, every course begins with a consultation so the doctor can assess your Prakriti (constitution), current condition, and any red flags before deciding on the right poultice type, oil, and course length.
Generally avoided during pregnancy unless an experienced Ayurvedic physician specifically recommends and supervises it — this is not a therapy to self-prescribe if you’re pregnant.
Abhyanga is a full-body warm oil massage using hands, while Kizhi uses heated herbal poultices pressed rhythmically over specific areas — Kizhi delivers concentrated heat and herbal medicine to a targeted joint or muscle group, which is why it’s the therapy of choice for localised pain rather than general relaxation.
