What Nasya Helps With

Sinusitis

Chronic congestion, sinus pressure, post-nasal drip. Nasya clears accumulated Kapha from the sinuses and restores drainage.

Migraine & Headache

Especially effective for migraine with a nasal or sinus component. Reduces attack frequency and intensity.

Cervical Stiffness

Chronic neck stiffness and cervical spondylosis respond well — Nasya works directly on the tissues of the head, neck and upper spine.

Insomnia

For sleep issues driven by head tension and mental noise. Nasya calms the head channels and settles the nervous system.

Hair & Skin

Premature greying, hair fall and certain pigmentation issues respond to a course of Nasya combined with appropriate lifestyle changes.

CLASSIFICATION

The Five Types of Nasya

Nasya isn’t a single fixed treatment — the oil and formulation used changes what it’s actually addressing:

1

Virechana Nasya

Detoxifying, decongestant oils and herbal powders — the primary choice for chronic sinusitis, allergies, and Kapha-driven congestion.

2

Brimhana Nasya

Nourishing oils and ghee-based formulations — used for mental fatigue, hair fall and premature greying, and for building strength in depleted, Vata-driven states.

3

Shamana Nasya

Balancing, pacifying formulations — used where inflammation or general dosha imbalance in the head region needs settling rather than aggressive clearing.

4

Navana Nasya

Personalised herbal oils tailored to a specific dosha pattern — often used alongside internal medicines for hormonal or endocrine-linked conditions.

5

Pratimarsha Nasya

A gentle, minimal-oil daily self-care variant using Anu Taila or Brahmi Ghee — the only form of Nasya considered safe for regular home use rather than a supervised course.

WHAT TO EXPECT

What a Nasya Session Feels Like

A brief head and face massage prepares the tissues. A few drops of the prescribed medicated oil are then administered through each nostril while you lie down with your head slightly extended. Most people feel a warm sensation moving through the head and sinuses — not unpleasant, and quickly followed by a noticeable clearing.

THE THREE STAGES

The Procedure, Step by Step

1. Purva Karma (preparation) — a brief head and face massage, sometimes combined with gentle steam, to prepare the tissues and open the channels before the oil is administered.

2. Pradhana Karma (main procedure) — you lie down with your head slightly extended, and a few drops of the prescribed medicated oil are administered through each nostril while you breathe deeply to aid absorption.

3. Paschat Karma (post-care) — a short rest period of 20–30 minutes, along with guidance on avoiding wind, dust, and cold exposure for the next few hours so the treatment isn’t undone immediately afterward.

SYMPTOM CHECK

Is Nasya Right for You

Nasya is worth considering if any of this sounds familiar:

Chronic Sinus Congestion or Recurring Sinusitis

Post-nasal drip, sinus pressure, or congestion that keeps coming back.

Migraine or Headaches With a Nasal or Sinus Component

Attacks that seem to build behind the eyes or sinuses specifically.

Chronic Neck Stiffness or Early Cervical Spondylosis

Tightness that radiates up into the head, not just the shoulders.

Sleep Disrupted by Mental Noise or Head Tension

Insomnia driven by an overactive mind rather than physical discomfort.

Hair Thinning or Premature Greying Tied to Stress

Gradual hair fall that’s coincided with a stressful period.

A Sense of Mental Fog or Reduced Focus

Difficulty concentrating that doesn’t have an obvious physical cause.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN

When We Ask You to Wait

Nasya is best postponed or avoided in a few specific situations:

Pregnancy or menstruation

Acute infection or high fever

Immediately after a heavy meal or intense physical exercise

A history of chronic nosebleeds (epistaxis)

Immediately after alcohol consumption

Children below 7 years, except the gentle Pratimarsha variant with supervision

None of these are permanent exclusions — most resolve once the underlying issue clears, and your consultation is exactly where this gets checked before a course is scheduled.

TRANSPARENT PRICING

Nasya Treatment Cost in Bangalore

What a Nasya session costs depends on the type of oil or formulation prescribed and whether it’s combined with other therapies like Shirodhara. Your clinic confirms the exact price at consultation, before any course is booked — not after.

Nasya — FAQs

Nasya is medicated-oil or herbal therapy administered through the nostrils. Classical Ayurveda describes the nose as the direct access route to the head region, so medicines delivered here are believed to act directly on the tissues, channels and nervous system of the head rather than needing to work through the rest of the body first.
Most people are surprised at how gentle it is. You’ll feel a brief warmth moving through the head and sinuses, sometimes a slight taste at the back of the throat, and that’s typically the extent of it — not unpleasant, and quickly followed by a noticeable sense of clearing.
Your doctor decides based on your condition. Virechana Nasya suits chronic sinusitis and congestion, Brimhana Nasya suits hair fall and mental fatigue, Shamana Nasya suits general inflammation or imbalance, Navana Nasya is used for hormonally-linked conditions, and Pratimarsha Nasya is the only form appropriate for regular self-administered use.
A standard course is 7 or 14 sessions, and some conditions benefit from an occasional maintenance session every few weeks after the initial course is complete. Your physician sets the schedule based on what you’re treating, not a one-size-fits-all number.
Yes — Nasya is one of the classical primary therapies for chronic sinusitis and gives meaningful long-term relief for most patients, particularly Virechana Nasya, which is specifically formulated to clear Kapha-driven congestion from the sinuses.
Nasya is especially effective for migraine that has a nasal or sinus component, and a structured course tends to reduce both the frequency and intensity of attacks over time rather than just addressing a single episode.
A course of Nasya, particularly the nourishing Brimhana type, is traditionally used for hair fall and premature greying when combined with appropriate lifestyle changes — it’s not a standalone miracle fix, but a genuine part of a broader approach.
Nasya is not typically combined with prescription nasal sprays. During a Nasya course, you’d generally be asked to pause other nasal medications, ideally in coordination with your ENT, so the two treatments don’t work against each other.
Nasya is generally avoided during pregnancy. Your physician will guide you on timing and alternatives if you’re currently pregnant or planning to be.
Nasya is best postponed during menstruation, acute fever or upper respiratory infection, immediately after a heavy meal or intense exercise, and if you have a history of chronic nosebleeds. It’s also generally avoided in very young children and the elderly except under close supervision.
Morning sessions (roughly 6–10am) are traditionally favoured for Vata and Kapha-driven conditions, while evening sessions can help calm Pitta and support sleep. Your physician will time your course based on what you’re treating rather than pure convenience.
Yes — by working directly on the head and nervous system, Nasya is traditionally used to calm mental noise and improve focus, and many patients report better sleep and a clearer head over the course of treatment.
A decongestant temporarily shrinks nasal tissue to relieve congestion for a few hours. Nasya uses medicated oils chosen for your specific constitution and condition, aiming at a longer-term shift in how the head channels function rather than a short-term symptomatic fix.
Yes, and it often is — combining Nasya with Shirodhara or Abhyanga is a common approach for stress-related and head-region conditions, since the therapies complement each other’s action on the nervous system.
Rest for 20–30 minutes, avoid wind, dust and cold exposure for a few hours, eat a light warm meal, and skip strenuous activity for the rest of the day so the treatment has time to settle.
Only Pratimarsha Nasya, the gentle daily self-care variant, is considered appropriate for children, and even that should only be done after a paediatric Ayurvedic consultation rather than at home without guidance.
Many patients notice some clearing and lightness after the very first session, but meaningful, lasting relief for chronic conditions like sinusitis or migraine typically builds over a full 7–14 session course rather than appearing after one visit.
It’s one of the five classical Panchakarma actions, but it’s also commonly prescribed as a standalone therapy for head, sinus and stress-related conditions without needing the full five-action protocol around it.
