AYURVEDIC ASTHMA CARE

Breathing That Comes Back

Asthma is not just about the lungs. Ayurveda treats it as a systemic imbalance where excess Kapha, weak digestive fire and stress all play a part. Our programme addresses each — and inhaler dependence typically drops meaningfully over time.

Understanding Asthma (Tamaka Swasa)

In Ayurveda, asthma is understood as Tamaka Swasa, a respiratory condition mainly associated with an imbalance of Kapha and Vata doshas. Modern medicine views asthma as a chronic condition requiring ongoing management; Ayurveda focuses on reducing symptom frequency, supporting respiratory function, clearing mucus, improving digestion, and restoring internal balance over time.

A normal day with asthma can feel unpredictable — a little dust on the road brings on a cough, a cold drink at lunch leaves the chest feeling heavy by night, a change in weather or a strong perfume suddenly makes breathing feel like work. For many people, asthma appears in patterns: a cough that returns at night, wheezing during seasonal changes, breathlessness after climbing stairs, tightness in the chest around dust, pollution, or cold air.

A structured Ayurvedic approach does not replace emergency asthma care or prescribed medicines. It supports long-term management by working on the body’s deeper patterns.

THE AYURVEDIC VIEW

What Causes Asthma According to Ayurveda

Asthma-like symptoms are connected to a disturbance in the respiratory channels, known as Pranavaha Srotas. When Kapha increases, it may create phlegm, heaviness, congestion, and obstruction. When Vata becomes disturbed, it may lead to irregular breathing, spasmodic cough, dryness, chest tightness, and breathlessness.

Common aggravating factors include:

Dust, Smoke and Cold Air

Dust, smoke, pollution, and cold air.

Mucus-Forming Foods

Heavy, cold, fried, or mucus-forming foods.

Curd, Sweets and Late Meals

Curd, sweets, refrigerated foods, and late-night meals.

Poor Digestion and Ama

Poor digestion and toxin buildup, known as Ama.

Stress and Poor Sleep

Stress, poor sleep, and irregular daily routines.

Seasonal Change

Seasonal changes and weak respiratory immunity.

WHAT’S INCLUDED

What Your Programme Includes

Classical therapies, formulations and daily practice — combined around your presentation.

Vamana

Where indicated — clears excess Kapha at its seat. The single most effective classical therapy for chronic bronchial asthma.

Nasya

Medicated oils through the nostrils clear the upper respiratory channels and reduce trigger sensitivity.

Herbal Formulations

Vasavaleha, Sitopaladi Churna, Kanakasava — classical medicines that support respiratory tissue and reduce inflammation.

Diet & Lifestyle

Warm, Kapha-pacifying foods, avoidance of specific triggers, and morning respiratory exercises tuned to your presentation.

THE PHARMACY

Key Ayurvedic Herbs for Respiratory Support

These herbs are not used the same way for every patient — the specific formulation depends on your condition, digestion, mucus level, and overall health, assessed at consultation.

Vasaka (Adhatoda vasica)

Traditionally used to support the respiratory system, clear excess phlegm, and ease breathing discomfort.

Tulsi (Holy Basil)

Known for respiratory-supportive, anti-inflammatory, and immune-supporting properties.

Pippali (Long Pepper)

Used to help reduce Kapha accumulation in the lungs and support respiratory strength.

Haridra (Turmeric)

Contains curcumin and is valued for supporting inflammation balance in the airways.

Kantakari

Commonly used to support relief from cough, congestion, and breathlessness.

Yashtimadhu

Helps soothe the respiratory tract and supports expectoration.

SYMPTOM CHECK

Is This Right For You

Ayurvedic Asthma Care is worth considering if any of this sounds familiar.

A Cough That Returns at Night

A cough that returns at night, or wheezing during seasonal changes.

Breathlessness on the Stairs

Breathlessness after climbing stairs, or chest tightness around dust, pollution, cold air, or strong smells.

Disturbed Sleep and Fatigue

Mucus formation, fatigue after coughing, or disturbed sleep from breathing discomfort.

Daily Inhaler Reliance

A pattern of relying on your inhaler daily rather than occasionally.

A Child With Recurring Wheeze

A child with recurring cough or wheeze where early intervention could help most.

What Diet Helps

Warm soups, cooked vegetables, moong dal, khichdi, ginger, black pepper, turmeric, cumin, and ajwain may support digestion and reduce heaviness. Sipping warm water throughout the day may also help manage mucus.

Foods that may worsen Kapha in some people include cold drinks, refrigerated food, curd (especially at night), deep-fried food, heavy sweets, ice cream, and late-night meals. Diet is personalised based on cough type, digestion, acidity, body weight, allergies, season, and overall strength.

Asthma — FAQs

A personalised approach that helps manage asthma symptoms by balancing Vata and Kapha doshas, reducing mucus formation, improving digestion, and strengthening respiratory function under medical guidance.
Asthma is a chronic condition, so permanent-cure claims should be avoided. Ayurveda can support long-term management, reduce trigger sensitivity, and help control recurring symptoms with proper consultation.
We study your body type, asthma pattern, digestion, triggers, sleep, medication use, and lifestyle before building a treatment plan that may include herbal support, diet correction, therapies, and breathing guidance.
Asthma-like symptoms are commonly linked to Vata and Kapha imbalance — Kapha creates mucus and obstruction, while disturbed Vata causes breathlessness, spasmodic cough, chest tightness, and irregular breathing.
Cold drinks, refrigerated foods, curd at night, deep-fried items, heavy sweets, excess dairy, and late dinners may increase Kapha in some people. Your doctor will personalise this based on your constitution.
Panchakarma — particularly Vamana — may be useful in selected cases, especially where Kapha accumulation and toxin load are significant. It’s assessed case by case, not applied to every patient.
In many cases, yes. Never stop an inhaler suddenly — any medication changes must be discussed with your treating pulmonologist, and Ayurvedic support typically works alongside prescribed medicine, not instead of it.
If cough, wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, mucus, or seasonal breathing discomfort keep recurring, early Ayurvedic assessment helps identify triggers and plan long-term respiratory support.
They can support respiratory health when prescribed correctly, but self-medication isn’t recommended — herbs must be selected based on body type, symptoms, existing medicines, and asthma severity.
Follow your doctor’s asthma action plan and seek urgent medical help immediately. Ayurvedic care supports long-term management — it is never a substitute for emergency asthma treatment.
Disturbance in the respiratory channels (Pranavaha Srotas). Increased Kapha creates phlegm, heaviness, and obstruction; disturbed Vata causes irregular breathing, spasmodic cough, dryness, and breathlessness.

Vasaka and Kantakari support mucus clearance and ease breathlessness, Tulsi and Haridra support inflammation balance and immunity, and Pippali and Yashtimadhu help reduce Kapha accumulation and soothe the respiratory tract.
Gentle Pranayama like Anulom Vilom and Bhramari may help improve breathing awareness and nervous system balance, but should be introduced carefully and avoided during active breathlessness or wheezing.
No — Vamana is a carefully staged classical procedure, quite different from vomiting during illness, delivered under physician supervision after appropriate preparation.
Yes — paediatric asthma responds especially well to early Ayurvedic intervention, with gentler protocols scaled appropriately for age.
An initial two-week intensive phase is typically followed by three to six months of internal medicines and follow-up sessions.
Yes — stress and poor sleep are named triggers in Ayurveda’s understanding of asthma, which is why lifestyle and stress management are built into a complete treatment plan.
