CLASSIFICATION

Types of Basti

Different types of Basti target different tissues, doshas and conditions.

Anuvasana Basti

Oil-based enema. Nourishing, lubricating — used for chronic Vata conditions, joint pain, cervical and lumbar disorders.

Niruha Basti

Decoction-based enema. Cleansing, purifying — clears accumulated toxins from the colon and beyond.

Janu Basti

Localised oil retention around the knee joint — not administered rectally, but the same therapeutic principle. Unmatched for chronic knee pain.

Kati Basti

Localised oil retention over the lower back. The single most effective therapy we have for chronic low back pain and sciatica.

Greeva Basti

Localised oil retention over the cervical spine. First-line therapy for cervical spondylosis and chronic neck stiffness.

THE THREE STAGES

How the Procedure Works

1

Purva Karma (preparation)

A consultation assesses your constitution, current imbalance, digestive strength and physical condition, followed by a light diet and, where indicated, preparatory oiling before the main procedure.

2

Pradhana Karma (main procedure)

For systemic Basti, the warm medicated oil or decoction is administered while you lie on your side; for localised Basti (Kati, Janu, Greeva), a ring of black gram dough is placed over the target area and warm medicated oil is poured in and held.

3

Paschat Karma (post-care)

Rest, a light warm meal, and clear guidance on diet and activity for the following day, so the effects of the session are given time to settle rather than undone by a heavy meal or cold exposure right after.

Systemic Basti sessions are typically quick and clinical.
Localised Basti (Kati/Janu/Greeva) sessions run 30–45 minutes and are deeply relaxing.
Course length follows classical schedules — 8, 16, or 30 sessions depending on your condition.

THE KING OF THERAPIES

Why Basti Is Called the King

Classical texts call Basti the king of therapies because it reaches conditions that other interventions cannot. Chronic joint pain, neurological conditions, low back pain, sciatica, and pretty much any presentation with a strong Vata component tend to respond to Basti when other therapies have plateaued.

SYMPTOM CHECK

Is Basti Right for You

Basti is worth considering if any of this sounds familiar:

Chronic Low Back Pain or Sciatica That Keeps Returning

Especially if it’s outlasted physiotherapy or painkillers.

Ongoing Knee Pain or Early-Stage Osteoarthritis

Stiffness or pain that limits stairs, walking, or daily movement.

Cervical Spondylosis or Persistent Neck Stiffness

Tightness from desk work or long hours at a screen.

Chronic Constipation or a Sluggish Digestive Rhythm

A strong Vata-driven digestive pattern that hasn’t responded to diet changes alone.

A Neurological Condition With a Vata Component

Facial palsy, tremor, or nerve-related pain, always assessed case by case.

A Sense That Other Therapies Have Plateaued

You’ve tried Abhyanga or Kizhi and want the next level of a structured Panchakarma protocol.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN

When We Ask You to Wait

Basti is best postponed or avoided in a few specific situations:

Acute fever or active infection

Severe diarrhoea or rectal bleeding

Immediately after abdominal surgery

Advanced pregnancy, unless specifically advised by your doctor

None of these are permanent exclusions — most resolve once the underlying issue clears, and your consultation is exactly where this gets checked before a course is scheduled.

DURING YOUR COURSE

Diet & Lifestyle

Warm, freshly prepared, easily digestible food supports the therapy while it’s working:

Favour

Moong dal khichdi, cooked rice and vegetables, warm herbal teas.

Avoid

Cold drinks, spicy or fried food, raw salads and packaged snacks.

Your physician will give you specific guidance based on your course and condition — this is a general starting point, not a substitute for that.

TRANSPARENT PRICING

Basti Treatment Cost in Bangalore

What a Basti course costs depends on the type prescribed, the length of the classical schedule (Yoga, Kala, or Karma Basti), and the medicated oils or decoctions used. Your clinic confirms the exact price at consultation, before any course is booked — not after.

BEFORE YOU BOOK

Basti — FAQs

Basti is medicated enema therapy, administered rectally for systemic conditions or as localised oil retention for joints and the spine. Classical texts call it “Ardha Chikitsa” — half of all Ayurvedic treatment — because it reaches Vata disorders that other therapies often can’t touch on their own.
No. A modern enema is designed purely for bowel evacuation using saline or chemical solutions. Basti uses herbal oils, decoctions, or ghee, chosen specifically for your constitution, and aims at systemic dosha balance and tissue nourishment, not just clearing the bowel.
Your doctor decides based on your condition. Kati Basti targets chronic low back pain and sciatica, Janu Basti targets knee pain and early osteoarthritis, Greeva Basti targets cervical spondylosis and neck stiffness, while Anuvasana and Niruha Basti work systemically for broader Vata imbalance, constipation, and detoxification.
Classical schedules are Yoga Basti (8 sessions), Kala Basti (16 sessions), or Karma Basti (30 sessions), spread across the appropriate number of days depending on your condition. Your physician selects the schedule that matches your presentation rather than applying one default course to everyone.
Localised Basti (Kati, Janu, Greeva) is genuinely relaxing — warm oil held in place with a dough ring, similar in feel to a deeply penetrating heat therapy. Systemic Basti (Anuvasana, Niruha) is quick and clinical, and most patients describe it as far less uncomfortable than they expected.
Kati Basti is widely regarded as one of the most effective classical therapies for chronic low back pain and sciatica, and many patients notice meaningful relief within the first three sessions of a structured course.
Janu Basti is one of the therapies most consistently used for chronic knee pain and early-stage osteoarthritis, and a number of patients are able to delay or avoid replacement surgery with a consistent course, though this depends entirely on how advanced the joint damage already is — your doctor will give you a realistic assessment, not a guarantee.
It follows three stages: preparation (a consultation and light diet, sometimes preceded by oiling), the main procedure (the medicated oil or decoction is administered, either rectally or held locally with a dough ring), and post-care (rest and a light warm meal, with clear diet guidance for the following day).
Yes, when delivered by trained Ayurveda physicians. Every Basti is preceded by preparatory assessment and monitored throughout the course, and your doctor adjusts the formulation and schedule based on how you respond.
Basti is best postponed or avoided during acute fever, severe diarrhoea, rectal bleeding, immediately after abdominal surgery, and in advanced pregnancy unless specifically advised by your doctor. Your consultation is where all of this gets checked before a course is scheduled.
Warm, freshly prepared, easily digestible food is recommended — simple rice preparations, moong dal khichdi, and warm herbal teas. Cold food and drinks, heavy or fried meals, and raw salads are best avoided for the duration of the course.
A massage works the surface muscles. Kati Basti holds a continuous pool of warm medicated oil directly over the lower back for an extended period, allowing much deeper penetration into the tissue and targeted action on the specific area causing pain, rather than general relaxation.
Yes, sciatica is one of the classical indications for Basti, particularly Kati Basti, since the therapy works directly on the Vata imbalance and inflammation that typically drives sciatic pain.
Yes, and it often is. Basti is frequently prescribed as part of a broader Panchakarma sequence that includes oleation (Abhyanga) and sudation (Swedana, including Kizhi) before the Basti itself, since this preparatory sequence improves how effectively the body responds to the enema therapy.
Lightness of body, improved bowel movement, reduced stiffness or pain, better appetite, and an overall sense of clarity are the classical signs of a properly administered course. Your doctor monitors for these throughout your sessions.
Vata tends to aggravate during the monsoon season, so Basti is traditionally considered especially valuable during this period as both preventive and therapeutic care, though it’s prescribed year-round based on individual need.
In most cases, no. Your doctor reviews your current medications during consultation and designs the treatment plan to work alongside them rather than replace them outright.
Kizhi uses heated herbal poultices applied externally to specific muscles and joints. Basti, in its systemic form, works internally via the colon to influence Vata dosha and nourish tissues throughout the body; in its localised form (Kati, Janu, Greeva), it holds warm oil over a joint rather than pressing heated bundles against it. Both are often used together in a broader treatment plan.
