AYURVEDIC PAIN MANAGEMENT

Relief Without Endless Painkillers

For most chronic pain — back, knee, shoulder, joints — modern medicine offers symptom control. Ayurveda offers something different: a structured programme that addresses the root cause so the pain stops returning.

Understanding Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is long-standing pain that persists beyond the usual recovery period, or occurs along with a chronic health condition such as arthritis. It may be “on and off” or continuous, and can affect people to the point that they can’t work, eat properly, take part in physical activity, or enjoy life. Common sources of pain are headaches, joint pain, shoulder pain, and backaches.

What Causes Chronic Pain?

There are many causes of chronic pain. It may have started from an illness or injury you may have long since recovered from, but the pain remained. Or there may be an ongoing cause of pain, such as arthritis or cancer. Many people suffer chronic pain in the absence of any past injury or evidence of illness.

Symptoms of Chronic Pain

With chronic pain essentially comes fatigue, sleeplessness, stress, and depression. Painkillers and physiotherapy are commonly used for chronic pain without much effectiveness. The characteristics of pain episodes include:

  • Mild to severe pain
  • Shooting, burning, and aching feeling/sensation
  • Discomfort, stiffness or soreness

OUR THERAPIES

Our Pain Management Techniques

Six classical therapies, selected and combined for your specific condition by an MD Ayurveda physician.

Abhyanga Massage

Done using specific medicated oils followed by steam to improve blood circulation, eliminate toxins, tone up the muscles, and nourish the skin.

Patra Pinda Sweda

Swedana (fomentation) using medicated herbs/powders after tradition. Effective in joint pain, stroke, and other musculoskeletal conditions.

Mardana with Sweda

A deep tissue relaxation massage done using medicated oils over the pressure points, which helps reduce muscular aches and pains.

Abhyanga & Pariseka

The procedure of pouring warm herbal decoction in a continuous stream over the body. Effective in joint pain, stroke, and other musculoskeletal conditions.

Shashtika Shali Pinda Sweda

A unique combination of Navara rice processed by a decoction of herbs and milk made into a poultice, used for fomentation.

Kati/Greeva/Janu Basti

Warm medicated oils used in the treatment lubricate the joints and energise the local marmas (vital points), thereby relieving pain and swelling.

WHAT WE TREAT

Conditions We Treat

The conditions we see most often across our 16 Bangalore clinics — each with a protocol built for its specific root cause.

Cervical & Lumbar Spondylosis

Persistent neck and lower-back pain caused by age, posture and lifestyle. We use Greeva Basti, Kati Basti and tailored Panchakarma protocols to relieve the underlying cause.

Sciatica

Shooting nerve pain down the leg. Kati Basti, Patra Pinda Sweda and internal medications reduce inflammation and free the pinched nerve.

Frozen Shoulder

Stiffness that limits arm movement. Localised oil therapies, fomentation and gentle mobilisation restore range of motion gradually and safely.

Arthritis / Rheumatoid Arthritis

Joint pain from degeneration or inflammation. A combination of detoxification, Snehana, internal medicines and lifestyle correction addresses both symptom and root.

Knee Pain & Osteoarthritis

Janu Basti, Patrabhyanga and oral medications relieve pain and slow degeneration. Many patients delay or avoid surgery with consistent treatment.

Migraine & Chronic Headache

Shirodhara, Nasya and dosha-balancing internal medicines treat the root imbalance rather than just suppressing the symptom.

SYMPTOM CHECK

Is This Right For You

Ayurvedic Pain Management is worth considering if any of this sounds familiar.

Pain that has lasted well beyond the usual recovery window

Back, neck, or joint pain that persists past when an injury or illness should have resolved.

Pain that comes with fatigue, poor sleep, or low mood alongside it

The whole-body impact chronic pain has, not just the physical symptom.

A history of painkillers or physiotherapy that helped only temporarily

Symptom-suppression approaches that never addressed the root cause.

Pain with no clear injury or diagnosis behind it

Chronic pain that can occur even without evidence of ongoing illness or past injury.

Being told surgery is the next step

A structured, doctor-supervised programme that many patients try before or alongside surgical consultation.

Wanting a plan that reduces medication dependence rather than adding to it

Shathayu’s approach is to lower medication load over time, not increase it.

OUR PROMISE

A Pain Programme That Actually Ends

Chronic pain deserves a plan that respects the body rather than fights it. Every programme at Shathayu is designed to reduce medication load over time, not add to it — and to protect your gut, kidneys and liver while it works.

BEFORE YOU BOOK

Pain Management — FAQs

A structured, doctor-supervised approach that treats chronic pain — back, joint, shoulder, neck — as a symptom of an underlying imbalance rather than something to simply mask with painkillers. It combines therapies like Abhyanga, Basti, and Swedana with internal medicines and lifestyle correction to address the root cause.
Chronic pain can follow an illness or injury that’s technically healed but left lingering pain, or come from an ongoing condition like arthritis. Many people experience chronic pain with no clear past injury or evidence of ongoing illness at all — Ayurveda treats this as a dosha imbalance requiring its own diagnosis and plan.
Through localised oil therapies (like Kati, Greeva, and Janu Basti), fomentation techniques (Patra Pinda Sweda, Shashtika Shali Pinda Sweda), deep tissue massage (Mardana with Sweda), and internal medicines that reduce inflammation and correct the underlying imbalance — reducing the need for painkillers over time rather than adding another one.
Yes — arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are addressed through a combination of detoxification, Snehana (oil therapies), internal medicines, and lifestyle correction, targeting both the inflammation and its underlying cause.
A therapy where warm medicated oil is retained within a dam of dough over the lower back, lubricating the joints and energising local marmas (vital points) to relieve pain and swelling — one of the primary treatments for lumbar spondylosis and lower back pain.
Yes, under qualified supervision. Shathayu uses 100% classical formulations — no steroids, no chemical fillers — so treatment is gentle on the liver and kidneys even with long-term use, unlike some conventional long-term pain medications.
Kati Basti combined with Panchakarma protocols tailored to the specific cause (spondylosis, disc issues, muscular strain) tends to be most effective, but the right combination depends on your specific diagnosis — assessed at consultation rather than applied generically.
Specific medicated oils are selected based on your condition and dosha — used in Abhyanga massage, Kati/Greeva/Janu Basti, and Patrabhyanga. Formulations are prepared in-house rather than sourced as generic over-the-counter oils.
Yes — tailored Panchakarma protocols are used alongside localised therapies like Basti for conditions such as cervical and lumbar spondylosis, arthritis, and sciatica, clearing the metabolic toxins Ayurveda considers a contributing factor to inflammation.
An anti-inflammatory, dosha-specific diet that avoids foods known to aggravate Vata (the dosha most associated with pain) is typically recommended alongside your therapy plan — your doctor provides specifics based on your individual case.
Yes — Ayurveda’s dosha-based diagnostic framework often identifies an imbalance even when conventional tests come back inconclusive, since chronic pain without clear injury or illness is a recognised presentation in Ayurvedic practice.
Kati Basti is the most targeted classical therapy for lower back pain specifically, often combined with broader Panchakarma protocols depending on whether the root cause is spondylosis, disc-related, or muscular.
Janu Basti (for knees), Patrabhyanga, and oral anti-inflammatory herbal medications are the most common combination, often alongside broader detoxification if the joint pain has a metabolic or inflammatory root.
Yes — frozen shoulder specifically responds well to localised oil therapies, fomentation, and gentle mobilisation techniques that restore range of motion gradually, without the downtime associated with more invasive interventions.
This varies by condition and severity, but most structured programmes run several weeks, with many patients noticing meaningful relief within the first few sessions and more complete resolution building over the full course.
Yes — Mardana with Sweda (deep tissue massage with medicated oils over pressure points) is specifically used for muscular aches and stiffness, often combined with steam therapy for faster relief.
Yes — Greeva Basti and Abhyanga massage are commonly used for cervical stiffness and shoulder tension, particularly when linked to posture or prolonged desk work.
That’s specifically the goal of Shathayu’s approach — every programme is designed to reduce medication load over time by addressing the root cause, rather than adding another medication to manage symptoms indefinitely.
Yes — Shirodhara, Nasya, and dosha-balancing internal medicines are used to treat the root imbalance behind migraines and chronic headaches, rather than just suppressing the pain when it occurs.
Yes — even after the original injury has technically healed, lingering pain is treated as its own condition requiring targeted therapy (oil treatments, fomentation, internal medicines) rather than assumed to resolve on its own.
