History of Ayurveda

Ayurveda is said to be first perceived by Lord Brahma (the supreme God); he taught Ayurveda to Lord Dhanwanthri (God of Ayurveda). To relieve the sufferings of the human beings Lord Dhanwanthri brought
Ayurveda to the earth. He divided Ayurveda into eight branches

  1. Kaya chikitsa (general medicine)
  2. Kaumarabhratya (pediatrics)
  3. Shalya (general surgery)
  4. Shalakya (ENT)
  5. Agada tantra (toxicology & forensic science)
  6. Bhoota vidya
  7. Rasayana chikitsa (geriatrics)
  8. Vajeekarana chikitsa (sexology)

These principles of Ayurveda are written down in Charaka Samhita & Sushruta Samhita, two of the most respected books of Ayurveda
